How to make It’s a Boy and Baby Cot Cake

Equipment You Will Need

  • FMM COT CUTTER SET
  • FMM QUILTED ROLLING PIN
  • FMM IT’S A BOY CUTTER
  • FMM GEOMETRIC SHAPES
  • FMM GIFT TAG CUTTER SET
  • FMM ADORABLE BABY
  • FMM NURSERY TAPPIT
  • FMM DAB-A-DUST (IF REQUIRED)
  • NON STICK MAT & NON STICK ROLLING PIN
  • WHITE & BLUE MODELLING PASTE
  • WATER & PAINTBRUSH (EDIBLE GLUE IF YOU PREFER)
  • 2 TIER 6” X 5” AND 8” X 5” CAKE & 11” CAKE BOARD COVERED IN WHITE FONDANT EDGED WITH BLUE RIBBON.
  • WHITE RIBBON ON BOTTOM OF TOP TIER.
  • SUGARCRAFT GUN & DISC WITH MEDIUM HOLE
  • WHITE PAPER LOLLY STICK & ROYAL ICING

Hints & Tips

  • Always read the project sheet in full before starting your cake!
  • To make your own modelling paste, add a little tylo to your fondant.
  • Allow the modelling paste shapes to sit and firm up for a short time before attaching to your cake.
  • If your modelling paste is sticking to your tools or mat use your FMM Dab-a-Dust for dusting with cornflour or icing sugar.

TO MAKE THE IT’S A BOY INSCRIPTION

  • (PREPARE 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE) Roll out blue modelling paste and cut out the inscription using the It’s a Boy Cutter. Allow 24 hours to dry.

TO MAKE THE BUNTING DECORATIONS

  • Roll out blue modelling paste and cut out 2 prams, 2 booties, 2 baby bottles, 2 dummies and 1 baby bib using the FMM Nursery Tappit. Sit to one side.

TO MAKE THE BOWS

  • Roll out blue modelling paste and cut out 3 small bows. Roll out white modelling paste and cut out 1 large bow using the decorating strips from the FMM Gift Tag Set. Sit to one side to dry off a little.

TO MAKE THE COT DECORATION

  • Roll out blue modelling paste and cut out cot panel number 1 using the FMM Cot Cutter Set. Roll out white modelling paste and cut out a white heart using the heart cutter on cot panel number 1. Sit to one side to dry off a little.

TO MAKE THE BOTTOM TIER DECORATION

  • Roll out blue modelling paste, emboss with the FMM Quilting Rolling Pin and cut out 27 squares using the 2nd smallest square from the FMM Geometrics set. Sit to one side. Roll out white modelling paste and cut out 29 white squares using the same square cutter. Sit to one side. Roll out blue modelling paste and cut out 27 hearts using the heart cut out on Cot Panel 1.

TO MAKE THE BABY

  • Roll out flesh colour modelling paste and cut out a baby face. Make 2 tiny sausage shapes of flesh paste and emboss with the FMM Knife & Scriber tool to look like fingers. Refer to photograph.

TO MAKE THE BUNTING

  • Measure around the outside of the top tier cake and divide by 3. Place a cocktail stick a small way in the cake all the way round starting in the centre. Knead a small amount of white fondant and place in the sugarcraft gun. Extrude the fondant from the gun through the disc. Drape the white fondant string over the cocktail sticks, allowing it to loop between to make the string for the bunting. Secure the fondant with water.

ASSEMBLING THE CAKE

  • (ATTACH ALL DECORATIONS WITH WATER OR EDIBLE GLUE) Measure around the outside of the top tier cake and divide by 3. Place a cocktail stick a small way in the cake all the way round starting in the centre. Knead a small amount of white fondant and place in the sugarcraft gun. Extrude the fondant from the gun through the disc. Drape the white fondant string over the cocktail sticks, allowing it to loop between to make the string for the bunting. Secure the fondant with water. ASSEMBLING THE CAKE (ATTACH ALL DECORATIONS WITH WATER OR EDIBLE GLUE)
  • Starting at the top centre of the bottom tier secure the blue and white squares to the cake tier creating a chequered pattern. Attach a blue heart to each of the white squares. Note you will need to cut the squares to fit the bottom of the tier. Squares will not match perfectly at the back of the cake.
  • Attach the cot panel to the front of the top tier. Secure the white heart in the centre of the cot and secure the white large bow below.
  • Attach the baby’s face and hands above the tops of the cot.
  • Attach the pram, bootie, bottle, bib and dummy decorations to the cake bunting.
  • Attach a small blue bow at the top of each bunting string loop.
  • Finally attach the dry It’s a Boy inscription. Place a white paper lolly stick in the cake and secure the inscription to it with royal icing.
